Prediction: Lance Armstrong top 5 finisher at 2012 Ironman World Championship

leave a comment »

I may be going out on a limb on this prediction (feel free to call me back to reality) but after Lance Armstrong’s performance on Sunday at the Ironman 70.3 Panama, Lance just went from “token celebrity to draw crowds” to “top tier pro” status in my mind.

Ironman 70.3 Panama
Panama City, Panama / February 12, 2012
1.2m swim / 56m bike / 13.1m run

Top 10 Men

1. Bevan Docherty (NZL) 3:50:13
2. Lance Armstrong (USA) 3:50:55
3. Richie Cunningham (AUS) 3:52:59
4. Rasmus Henning (DEN) 3:53:38
5. Romain Guillaume (FRA) 3:54:44
6. Jesse Thomas (USA) 3:55:30
7. Chris Lieto (USA) 3:56:21
8. Ivan Vasilyev (RUS) 3:58:32
9. Oscar Galindez (ARG) 4:00:53
10. Bert Jammaer (BEL) 4:01:24

Until Sunday, I felt that Lance had a good opportunity to continue to raise awareness for his philanthropic efforts and quench his seemingly insatiable appetite for competition with some solid pro performances but never would I have thought he would be mixing it up with Bevan Docherty for the top podium spot in the final miles of an Ironman 70.3.

What impressed me the most about Armstrong’s performance was his discipline to pace properly on the bike and to have the legs to put in a competitive run.  I believe he’s being coached well and his training is on target.  The Sunday performance in Panama will be a boost of confidence for an athlete who has proven to be unbeatable when he believes he can win.

It’s still an early season win with a long season of training, racing and fitness improvements for the field but Lance has certainly demonstrated that he is finding a way to possibly put together a top 5 performance at Kona this year.
